Our take

South America's two giants pull in different directions: Brazil is tropical, warm, and high-energy; Argentina is temperate, refined, and more European. Brazil is beaches, Rio, the Amazon, and samba-fuelled cities; Argentina is Buenos Aires, Patagonia, wine, and steak. They even share Iguaçu Falls on their border, which is the obvious place to combine them.

Choose Brazil for beaches, jungle, and sheer vitality — Rio, the northeast coast around Salvador, and the Amazon, best in a warm, party-leaning trip. Choose Argentina for cooler sophistication — the tango-and-café culture of Buenos Aires, the trekking of Patagonia (El Chaltén, the glaciers), and the wine and steak of Mendoza. Brazil is tropical energy; Argentina is wine, mountains, and city polish. If you can, fly into one, out of the other, and see Iguaçu in between.
