Our take

Most people who compare these end up doing both — they border each other and slot together neatly — but if you have to choose, Vietnam is the bigger, more varied country and Cambodia is the shorter, more intense add-on. Vietnam gives you cities, food, coast, and landscapes over a full north-to-south journey; Cambodia is smaller, rawer, and poorer, but holds one of the world's great sights.

Go to Vietnam for range and value — Hanoi, Halong Bay, Hoi An, the Mekong, and superb food, all cheap and easy to string together. Go to Cambodia above all for Angkor Wat, the vast temple complex at Siem Reap that's worth a trip on its own, alongside a moving, sobering reckoning with the Khmer Rouge history. Vietnam is the main course; Cambodia is the unmissable few days you add on either side.
